Mohican State Park
A Digital Signage Case Study
The Mohican State Park Lodge and Conference Center opened its doors to the public in April of 1974. Nestled in the scenic river valley of southern Ashland County, the unique lodge offers a medley of tourist attractions and a complete range of amenities. The lodge is surrounded by 6,000 acres of Mohican State Forest and borders Pleasant Hill Lake.
Because the Lodge is located in what some people call “the middle of no where,” it is hard to keep their visitors informed of all there is to do in the area. The State Park Lodge has chosen Retriever Digital Signage to communicate with guests at check-in and any time they are near the front desk. They inform guests of hotel amenities and services as well as the many tourism attractions in the vicinity. Mohican General Manager, Laura Weirick, commented, “We have written in-room guides, and I think these days it doesn’t seem like people want to take the time to read through printed material. So [The Retriever] kind of puts it right in front of their face as they’re coming in.”
The lodge offers 96 recently renovated, spacious guest rooms, each offering a private balcony. Bromfield’s Dining Room offers full service and affordable dining for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, while Boxers Lounge has full beverage service and a dance floor. Laura likes the ability to cross promote specials, events, and menus. “We have the opportunity to cross-market, and we use it a lot as far as dinner specials in the restaurant and any kind of special or feature in the gift shop. So we’re able to talk about other areas of the hotel as people are checking in.”
Mohican is the canoeing capital of Ohio and offers a brand new zip line course as well as many other travel and tourism activities. “As a destination hotel, we also like to advertise some of our area attractions on our digital sign, because that’s what draws people in and has them stay multiple days,” said Laura.
The Lodge has been using the Retriever since 2008. “The ease of use for us has been great,” Laura said. “The slide features, the website—easy to use. And it’s nice that we’re able to make our own slides.”
Being a very satisfied customer, Laura and her team have been instrumental in adding Retriever Digital Signage systems to many of the other Ohio State Parks, including Burr Oak Lodge, Hueston Woods Lodge, Shawnee State Park, and Malabar Farm State Park.
